A Force United: Kind Of

If there was ever some kind of divine way of indicating that this season's Senators team just doesn't have it, last night's game against the Dallas Stars should serve as a prime example. In the wake of their 5-4 OT win against the Stars, the Senators were busy being torched by the mainstream media and the blog community for their refusal to respond to Jere Lehtinen's hit on Alfredsson. Here's an unbiased account of the hit:
Alfredsson, while keeping the puck in at the blue line, pivoted and turned his back to the oncoming pressure of Lehtinen, who--despite calls for bringing respect amongst players back into the league--continued to run at Alfredsson despite plenty of time to change his course. Alfredsson's neck snapped back, and he fell forward about a foot into the boards. Did anything happen as a result? Not really; Brendan Bell skated towards Lehtinen and gave him what looked like a stern talking to, but no one jumped the guy. ~ Sens Army Blog
Our friend, Don Brennan was a little more harsh in his analysis of the night's events by describing the Senators' inaction as disgusting. Don even made a logical point by alluding to the fact that the team has historically failed to respond to dirty hits. And he backed up his argument by using a modern example - last season's hit on Alfredsson by Mark Bell.

Unfortunately, all semblance of a good column was undone when Don unwittingly filled the rest of his piece with Senators' drinking games and approximately ten references to how shitty Martin Gerber is.
Sometimes you win because of your goalie, and sometimes you win in spite of him. The Senators are 50.9 seconds from going into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead when some guy named Matt Niskanen slides a 31-foot shot off Martin Gerber's right pad and between his legs. Whether it was deflected or not, if you're Hartsburg, how the hell do you not yank Gerber right then and there? ~ Don Brennan, The Ottawa Sun
It's ironic because many educated Sens fans are probably asking why they didn't stop reading after the first third of your column.

It's disappointing that after a Sens win in what was essentially a must win game, the fans and media are focused on retributive justice. Rather than discuss how the team overcame Alfie's absence and some mediocre goaltending, we're left questioning the character of this team. It's all overblown and makes for fodder on the local talk radio programs. I can only imagine how irate Glenn Kulka will be on Monday morning.
