I just try to write Graeme Nichols articles and try not to think about it

I was perusing this morning's Ottawa Sun when I came across an unintentionally funny article concerning the sole Senators prospect at the Canadian Junior Development Camp. According to the article, which was written by Shane Ross, Sens prospect Louie Caporusso put on a clinic last night while playing under the watchful eyes of the Sens GM, Bryan Murray.

I Googled Louie Caporusso to see what kind of research I could do on the kid before writing this piece. I came across a forums driven website named HFboards.com which extensively covers any imaginable hockey topic. After a few minutes, it's quite obvious that this site has an interesting yet incredibly knowledgeable audience.

The polarity of the users is astounding. It's apparent that these individuals have spent vast quantities of time pouring over every facet related to the Senators organization or you're left wondering whether the Royal Ottawa just got wireless internet. There's no middle ground here.

Where else could you possibly find a blend of threads like:

- "Vote for the 17th best Sens prospect"
- "If you needed a surrogate father for your child, which Sens player would you prefer?"
- "Jason Allison is available, should we sign him?"
- "What was the name of the hooker who Kevin Stevens was busted doing coke with?"

Consequently, you're torn between being either depressed or impressed with the amount of time and discussion being spent by hockey crazed fans.

Suffice it to say, I found two Louie Caporusso threads within a minute of searching the boards and the information that I found was pretty decent. If you're looking to get lost in some trivial hockey discussion while at work, check out the site.

After some quick browsing, here's what I could find on Caporusso.

Caporusso was the Sens 3rd round draft choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Drafted out of St. Michael's OPJHL program, the 5'10" 180lb. Caporusso currently attends the University of Michigan where he put up 12 goals and 21 points in 33 games last season. While undersized, Caporusso projects as a potential top 6 forward who has soft hands and a ton of speed. Unfortunately because of his size, he's seen as somewhat of a long-term project who will take a few more years to develop at the University of Michigan. I love the fact that he's a Wolverine for the sole fact that the Yost Ice Arena is one of the best places to watch a hockey game in the world.

After finishing the Ross article, I've concluded that Louie not only has the mental fortitude to play in this city, he has the ability to flourish here and I'll explain why. I should also use this time to give kudos to Ross for writing a good hockey article. It's nice to see someone other than Garrioch or Brennan be given the opportunity to write something hockey-related.

For a city whose fan base microanalyses every facet of a player, it's important for players to ascertain that every move they make on or off the ice will be scrutinized by the public and the media. That's why it was refreshing to hear Louie say, "I knew (Murray) was there, it's kind of hard not to notice him." Really? In an arena filled with 700 people, Caporusso was cognizant enough to notice Murray in the crowd? Call me naive, but I don't think Murray was walking around the rink wearing a pink fedora yelling, "Caporutttttttttttttttttthhhhhhhhoooooo!"

Not only did Louie realize that Murray was in attendance, he had the ability to elevate his game while under Murray's watch. Caporusso opened the scoring 2:57 into last night's Red vs. White Intersquad game at the University of Ottawa. Apparently he beat Jake Allen on a "nifty backhand shot to the top corner."

Need more reason to root for Caporusso? The kid's already referring to himself in the 3rd person. "I just try to play Louie Caporusso hockey and try not to think about it." Who doesn't love this? I don't even think Emery or Spezza have referred to themselves in the third person. Steve Begin sure, Emery or Spezza no.

Unfortunately, there's only one thing disconcerting about his 3rd person reference so here's a little advice to Louie. If I had to play hockey and get to the pinnacle level of competition, I'd probably try and aim a little higher. Why settle for being Louie Caporusso, a 3rd round fringe NHL prospect, when you could be so much more?
