The Scenario

...The incumbent #1 goalie sucks.
...The backup goalie that was acquired during the offseason is tearing it up.
...The 291st pick from the 2003 NHL Entry Draft is tearing it up in Binghamton.
...The incumbent #1 goalie makes $3.6 million.
...The incumbent #1 goalie isn't happy.
...Did I mention that Gerber sucks?

So what do you do if you're Bryan Murray?

My short answer?

Since Alex Auld has solidified himself as the #1, waive Martin Gerber.

Personally, Gerber's fate was sealed for me during last week's Flyers game. In the first few minutes of the game, Alex Auld gloved a soft dump in and the fans smattered him with applause. Is this how much we've fallen? What a sign of how low our expectations have become. Oh, you can catch a floating puck from the red line? Huzzah!

After tonight's game against the alleged Eastern Conference favorites, it's quite obvious that the Sens don't measure up to the Canadiens. Even with some solid play by Alex Auld this team's other holes manifested themselves ce soir. With approximately $3.2 million in available cap room, by waiving Gerber, the team can alleviate another $1.85 to $3.7 million.

If Murray decides to waive Gerber now, we can all cross our fingers and invest some faith that a team like the New Jersey Devils could put in a claim. Did In a worst case scenario, he clears waivers. But even then, Murray would be able to place him on re-entry waivers or just choose to bury his salary in the AHL. Just by getting half his salary cleared from the books would afford the team the opportunity to add a substantial salary at a later date.

Is it really worth having an unhappy overpaid backup? Not for $3.7 million.
