"I've thought a lot about it and I've talked with a lot of GMs over the last little while and the last few days, actually. You can do that, but are you going to regret it a little ways down the road because you're giving up a player that is a very good player in this league for maybe the sake of shaking the team up? That's a fine line right now, but very definitely we just can't go on doing what we're doing." ~ Bryan Murray, Ottawa Sun
If you read into what Bryan Murray's saying, he makes it clear that he is or has seriously considered trading one of the team's better players. Since Spezza is the only "very good" player without a NTC, it's easy to deduce that Murray wasn't talking about Martin Gerber. Sorry guys.
Bryan Murray's right though. This Senators club is caught in limbo right now. They're probably nowhere near as bad as their record indicates but no one has delusions of grandeur for them either. Considering that the core of this team went to the Stanley Cup Finals two years ago, I don't blame Murray for affording them the opportunity to turn it around. However, he makes it quite clear that they're running out of time. Considering what games are on the docket for this week, things could ( and probably will) get ugly quick - and that's notwithstanding their new black third jerseys. With two games against the Rangers and another against the Habs, there's a distinct possibility that this could be mired in a 7-game losing streak by the time Sunday morning rolls around. Let it be known: if Wade Redden goes all Joey Corvo on us Saturday afternoon, it will more than a hangover that induces some vomiting from me on Sunday morning.
That's not to say that there is no reason for optimism if Ottawa continues to drop a few more games. Take the Washington Capitals for example. To start last season, they stumbled out of the gate to a mediocre 6-14-1 record. After American Thanksgiving had passed, the Capitals went 37-17-7 the rest of the way. So what's the caveat? Caps brass decided to fire their Head Coach - Glen Hanlon - and brought in Bruce Boudreau. That's right, they wanted to shake things up.
James Bond likes his martinis shaken, not stirred. Is it time we stopped stirring the same ingredients and shook things up as well? The ball is in your court Mr. Murray and I don't envy your position right now. If I could offer one piece of advice: Tread carefully. Your decision for the direction of this club will have massive ramifications. No one can blame you for taking your time.
