Oilers Vs Sens: Game Day Thread

Senators 4, Oilers 3

Poor Ladislav Smid. Had Heatley not vetoed a trade to Edmonton, Smid might never have contracted the swine flu. In a game that will likely be billed as the Battle of the Diminished Heatley Returns (TM), Cogliano, Penner, Smid and the rest of the Edmonton Oilers arrive in Ottawa with some significant injuries and an abysmal road record (2-5-0). Even though they are coming off a victory that handed the Colorado Avalanche their first home loss, the Oilers will still be without stars Ales Hemsky and Sheldon Souray. In order for Ottawa to win, they have to play a more disciplined game and for everyone's sake, I hope that Cheechoo and Michalek outshine their counterparts so that we're spared from some more revisionist anti-Heatley commentary.

Bryan Murray Looking to Deal:

“We have to make a tweak if we can,” Murray said Monday before heading to Toronto, where the National Hockey League’s 30 general managers are meeting this week to discuss head shots, rule changes, equipment standards and maybe a deal or two.

“Very definitely, we have to find a way to get at least one more player here,” he said, acknowledging that player would probably be another forward. “I’m certainly going to investigate as we go forward here to see if there’s anything more we can do, and at some point we’ll figure out if we need to make a change.”

Ottawa's forward ranks are already congested as is. God help us if Bryan Murray acquires another forward and buries Shean Donovan a little deeper down the depth chart. If there's a deal to be made, hopefully it involves a situation in which Bryan Murray can upgrade Jonathan Cheechoo. Unfortunately, based on the standings right now, the only team that's out of the playoff race are the Carolina Hurricanes. I'm not sure if old, expensive players like Rod Brind'Amour ($3.6M cap hit for this and next season) or Ray Whitney ($3.55 for just this year, but protected by a NTC) are appealing to Sens fans. However, if Carolina's not asking for much and Ottawa can move Cheechoo or Kelly's contract, maybe it's something worth considering.

Watch Out For Oilers Fans

One of Silver Seven Sens' sister sites doesn't understand why Sens fans would take issue with Dustin Penner thinking that Sens fans would prefer the Edmonton deal to the San Jose Heatley deal and are redirecting traffic here to check it out. Thanks for the hits fellas.

Hey Nichols,

I'm the Oilers blog from Bloguin--Low On Oil. I did a photoshop of Dany Heatley with Sens owner, Eugene Melynk's $4 million dollar bonus over on my blog for the GDT. I noticed that Puck Daddy quoted you recently which was pretty cool.

I have to admit that I was pretty excited about the initial news of the Heatley trade. However, Dustin Penner's having quite an amazing year. Currently, he has two more points than Heater in one less game played. As well, Penner is +10 while Heatley is only +1. Penner's also one of the top penalty killers in the league at present.

Penner was asked today in the Edmonton Journal if he would wear a Dany Heatley jersey during the pre-game skate. He replied, "No, but there now half off, aren't they?" Smid's also been one of our more reliable defencemen this year though he's missed a few games due to H1N1.

As for tonight, the Oilers will be missing some key players in Hemsky, Souray, Horcoff, and others.

cheers,

Jay

You'd think those clowns at Copper & Blue would be sympathetic to a player making smart-ass comments to insult a team, and thereby insult its fans.

Does it make me a bad person if I say that "I hope Penner puts weight back on faster than Kirstie Alley."?

Hey, don't slag Dustin Penner--it's not his fault that Dany didn't waive the NTC. Penner's actually one of the funniest quotes in the game--you just have to note his deadpan delivery. He's certainly not an arrogant guy at all.

Penner wore a Santa Claus costume with "No Trade Claus" on the back for Halloween. If anything Penner's jokes are directed at Heatley--not at all to do with the Ottawa team or fans.

I predict that the Senators will have a penalty or two pretty early in the game. This will make a lot of Senators fans stroke out, but then they'll win the game 4-1. Cheechoo is going to score tonight. Kovalev's got two points up his sleeve. Foligno is going to fall down at least once.

Senators vs. Springfield Falcons... Today, the Oilers called up prospect, Ryan O'Reily, who will be playing in his first NHL game. Already, we've called up Ryan Potulny and Liam Reddox from the Springfield Falcons. Wow, our lineup is riddled with injuries, so it would take a miracle for the Oilers to win this game.
