Jared Shoe-In?

What a great day to be a Senators fan. It's hard not to be happy these days when you open your newspaper in the morning and read about another young blue chip defenseman getting a chance in pre-season. It's hard not to get just a little excited when Jared Cowen appears on the roster. The sooner he gets NHL ready, the sooner we can forget about Big Z. It will be a great chance for Sens fans to see what our most recent first rounder can do against the Habs. Although, to be fair, it won't exactly be a great indicator of the NHL for Cowen as he will be facing the same size of boy as he does in the WHL. Cowen should have no problem handling les smurf squad. Either way, its a great day for the organization to be able to throw a kid of this pedigree onto the ice after being relatively shielded by his knee injury. There's a couple of things worth considering when discussing this pre-season game, and yes, we are taking a pre-season game this seriously.

1. With a plethora of puck moving defencemen at their disposal the Senators have been quite open about their lack of a big body presence on the back end....
2. Cowen represents a big body presence on the back end, even if the kid still needs his weight to catch up with his height. Is it possible the kid is getting a look to gauge whether or not the big body d-man is available in house instead of through trade?
3. Relocating those assets that the Senators would have to part with for a big defencemen could, and should be better used on a second line centre.
4. If his knee was really an issue, would the Senators be playing him in an NHL game? I mean, his knee is at shoulder height for the Habs forwards, this could be a big problem! The Senators must think he's fit for battle.
5. The big one, could Cowen be NHL ready?

So now you know where we're headed with this lets see what others have to say:

"We won’t put a time line (on him). We know that he’s going to play this year for Spokane or for us, depending on how quick he heals. From there, we’ll see how it goes." Pierre Dorion Chief of Amateur Scouting, Ottawa Senators

"Jared has proved to play his best hockey on the biggest stage and his draft position would have improved playing the end of the season and the playoffs. Jared did not get the chance to shine at the biggest time of the year. He proved that the previous season." Tim Speltz, G.M. Spokane Chiefs.

So it looks like we got ourselves a kid who has no NHL timetable and who plays his best hockey on a big stage? Sounds like a match made in heaven don't it folks? Let's not get ahead of ourselves here though. Let's be rational and look at this big picture.

1. Would the Senators really be so bold as to place two rookie defensemen on the roster?
2. It would give Cowen and extra year to prove he can dominate in the WHL and at the WJC and give the Sens more eye time on him as well.
3. We have a lot of defencemen as is, who gives?

All things to consider, and now that I've done my best to hype him I guess we have to wait and see how he does in his first NHL game.

Oh - and can we all start learning how to spell this guys name its C-O-W-E-N. Yes that includes you Chris Stevenson, we all saw that, don't think we didn't.

I'm excited to see him play. I didn't believe for a second that he'd be game ready; everything that was said has been contrary to what is happening now, haha.

So I'm very excited, it sounds like they believe they've got something very special in this guy. Fuck Luke Schenn, we've got Jared Cowen.

The "Cadillac" in tough tonight!

Tim...cc to Graeme

Mr. C-o-w-e-n playing in the "Montreal Forum" on a Friday Night on one leg...give the kid a break...and the Shmirfs are flying in the pre-season.

But me and Dorion cannot get past just looking at this "Mountain" with his gear on. I can't stop smiling...I want to see him bust a few heads at the World Juniors. What a Draft Pick!

Note: I would have held him out but that's not the way we think these days. Any mishaps and I start crushing their "Nuts"!

Timmy my boy,

I know smilies/smiley.gif haha. It was that quote which I was alluding too. They made it sound like they were just watching his health until he healed and then they were sending him back. Except playing him is going against what they made it sound like. It either means Ottawa's desperate or they're excited for how quickly he's healed. I really hope they're doing the right thing. I know they said he'd play for them if he was ready, but all the talk and the rumors were that he'd likely just stay until he healed and not see game action.

Ah, so a canucknik sighting. I firmly believe this team needs Wade Redden back. He's paramount to success.

Yeah, I might not be able to watch the game tonight either. If some of you readers want to provide some in game commentary, in this article thread, please do. I'd like to read some first-hand feedback on how the team and Cowen looked.

Thanks.

OWA it's Canucnik, one "K" only...Official Imaginary DEFENCEMAN's Coach of the Ottawa Senators, unabashed fan of Alf and his pup but listened to by Bryan and his group when he (MR. Murray) thinks they need some constructive criticism.

Note: After all that It's nice to make you aquaintance...Keep your head up!

I'm gonna try to watch the RDS feed on Bell if they don't black it out - I need some French practice anyway. I'll give you my thoughts on our up and coming version of "Larry Robinson" ... sorry Jared, don't mean to pin high hopes on you.

A Snoozer...
written by Grinder , September 18, 2009
Not much of a game, but a few observations. Pascal Leclaire looks steady, healthy, calm and technically far superior to Gerber.

Michalek is at home with Alfie and Spezza. The speed of this unit is excellent. Michalek is probably one of the best players on the ice tonight. With Spezza's speed, Michalek is a much better wingman than Cheechoo.

Picard is showing that he is far better than Lee again tonight. Canucnik is a big fan of Picard, so he'll be happy to see his boy's excellent play in camp. I like Campoli/Picard as a pair with the big line of Alfie, Spezza and Michalek. Nice mobility and rapid puck movement.

Cowan at 18 looks ready, although I'd be shocked if he started the season here. Amazing draft pick!

All in all, a very boring game however...

I had a comment wrote but it got blown away - I guess the login expired.

Grinders summary pretty accurate. Cowen not ready IMHO. Needs a year in Junior/AHL. I wouldn't rush him.

Michalek didn't disappoint.

Picard is our best positional Defenceman, solid and with a little Offence. He could bump the pup??

Schub will end up in Tampa...we are going to play you on his side so that when you go to retrieve in the corner...you might end up like a bug on the glass. Where shall I send the corpse?

Well since my view of the game last night was limited I went out to SBP today to check out the practice with my son.

Who'd I see? - Karlsson, Kuba, Volchenkov, Carkner, Phillips and #51 who I have to look up - Derek Smith. We sat in the D end of the rink.

Karlsson - looks OK. I can see why his shot his getting attention. No problems hitting the net and rarely messed up getting it away during the one timers.

Smith? Meh. Ok but didn’t stand out.

The guy that stood out the most - Carkner. That guy looks like a rock. Can shoot and pass well - looked like he led the team in stretching at centre ice. From what I see I’d take him over Schubert as a #7D/RW fill in. Looks like Neil’s brother. Missing teeth, roughed up mug. Not sure on his speed, but he looked like the kind of character guy that you’d want on your side during a brawl.

Forward Notes – saw Foligno taking draws vs Shannon. He (Foligno) didn’t win many, Shannon lined up at C flanked by Kovalev and Cheechoo (White jerseys) during 3 on 2 and zone breakouts. Foligno, Fisher and Regin wore light blue. Other colors – Orange (Donovan), Grey (Ruutu). I note colours because they may indicate line combinations (or positions?) and I have a couple of short video clips … I can email them if interested.

#68, #36, #37 out there too – La Pierre, Hennessey, Bailey?

Donovan was pretty damn quick for his size and scored a beauty on 2 on 1s, backhander top shelf. Where the hell is that in games?

Cheechoo looked OK – decent shooter but could definitely use Dono’s top gear.

Lot of posts hit – no need to practice that one guys, until they make a post that’s slanted to deflect the puck in, try to hit the mesh. Maybe that’s why we are seeing so many damn posts hit during games so far.

Also on a not so Senator note WTF is up with Comrie? Where the hell was that last year? 4 assists and a fight in one game.

MoP:

Good to hear your account from this morning's session. It's interesting to hear that Shannon and Foligno are obviously going to be given every opportunity to win the second line center job ahead of Fisher.

You didn't answer the big questions...

Can Ryan Shannon cary the second line to second place?

Is my Pup...Alf's Pup...5'9" or 5'10"? A guess will suffice.

Can Ryan Shannon carry the second line?

Too early to tell. However, if the benchmark is Fisher's annual 45-point production, I think he can.

Is Karlsson too small? Possibly. Although I haven't seen his height as a disadvantage in his play. Regardless of his size, he's shown a knack and willingness to use his body. If he's not shy or passive in his play, I think he'll be fine.

Garrioch says "Erik" is 5'11"...trying to make him bigger. But it's the converse that's best if your smaller ya wanna be heavier more compact. Just like Bruce, he thinks he, himself is 5'll" but he's really 5'9"
