Fortunately over the past few days, while we’ve been trying to get the site up and running, nothing significant has happened regarding our Senators. Even though the team has officially unveiled Alexei Kovalev and they’ve unveiled Brad Lauer as an assistant coach, the news is moot because we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop in regards to Dany Heatley. And it makes for a terrible situation. Things are so shitty in this fair city, speculation of whether or not the sports media world will crash Jason Spezza’s wedding is dominating the print and airwaves. Oh my god, will they or won’t they show up?!? Oh my god! (UPDATE: According to the Ottawa Sun, Dany will not be attending Spezza’s wedding this weekend!)
Of course they’ll show up. There’s no point getting worked up about it. Like Lee Versage mentioned on the radio, they’ll show up because they get paid to do it. Besides, they’re all worked up to get the scoop and trump each other and sell papers. As shitty as it seems, tabloid journalism sells.
I digress, I’m not writing to talk about how classy sports journalists are. Instead, because I’ve spent the majority of my time tweaking the site, I’ve been kind of out of the loop regarding the Senators. With that, I think it’s best if I took you readers along through a tour of the Senators Interweb.
Have you been to the latest Senators rumour site — Sens Buzz? Well, check it out because the author, AlabamaPanda, does a good job keeping the site updated frequently. Interestingly, he dropped this nugget of information recently:
Washington Capitals are heavily considering Alexandre Picard as a good 1-2 punch with Norris Trophy runner up Mike Green.
Really? Alexandre Picard? Our Alexandre Picard? Our 7th defenseman? Geez…
Maybe he’s right. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. When I think of creating a good 1-2 punch with Mike Green, the first name on my list is Alexander Picard. The second name, Brendan Bell.
Since I’m checking out the rumour sites, I may as well check out another one – SportsTalkBuzz . Ah, a new Kevin Lee piece. Delicious.
The Sens will be naming Chris Schwarz the new conditioning coach and Dom Nicoletta will be the new assistant athletic therapist after serving as the Binghamton Senators athletic therapist for a number of years. The Schwarz and Nicoletta hirings were first reported in this blog over 2 weeks ago!!
Is that what we’ve come to during these dog days of summer? Patting ourselves on the back for breaking news on who will become the new assistant athletic therapist? Damn, this is sad. Your Honor, I give you Exhibit A that the alleged Bryan Murray gag order is working. What will next week bring? Discovering which 10-year old will get to ride the zamboni during the Opening Night’s first intermission. Or maybe we’ll learn who’s ushering section 112. Stay tuned…
WARNING, WARNING!!! TANGIBLE INFORMATION ALERT!!!!
Finally, some information that isn’t being carried by the local papers. Over at ASB, the author, Duff, has touched upon some comments made by Paul Kelly, director of the NHLPA. According to an interview with Dan Tencer on 630 CHED in Edmonton, Kelly gave this statement:
“I think that this been kind of twisted in a negative way, which is unfortunate for Dany. I think he’s just a victim of a bad set of circumstances,” said Kelly about Heatley, who requested a trade earlier in the off-season.”
“While it is true that he requested a trade, it was not Dany Heatley or his agent that made that fact public. I think Dany’s been unfairly treated by the media and by the (Senators) organization.”
“It’s clear that they didn’t have enough of a conversation to clarify where they were at. Unfortunately this thing has taken a bit of a bad twist. We think that Dany has been getting a bit of a raw deal. I think the day will come that he’ll have his opportunity to clarify some of these things. Where it will be, nobody really knows.”
Well, that’s a surprise stance — The PA Director supporting a player. The only omission from the statement was that Kelly went on to say that his next task would be to hold up Heatley’s balls while he takes a shit. Seriously though, the only surprise here is the portrayal of Dany as a victim. Regardless of who leaked his trade request, his reputation was going to take a beating from the media and fans here. While his representatives may have underestimated the backlash, they had to know that he’d take a hit publicly. (This may be the first time that Heatley ever willingly took a hit to make something happen.) However, Kelly’s right when he says that Heatley will have to come forward to set the record straight.
Unfortunately, all we have to go on is that his time on the 2nd PP unit is the reason for his request. This perceived “selfishness” has undermined Cory Clouston. As his silence continues, so will the rumours and portrayals of Heatley as a selfish bastard. So whether Dany likes it or not, his silence speaks volumes. If my character was getting assassinated like Heatley’s, I would have come forward, broken the silence and set the record straight. So much time has now passed since his initial request, who’s going to take his words at face value when he finally steps up to the mic?
