Five On Five: Erik Karlsson

So I was recently mucking around NHL.com and Behind the Net to gauge how effective a few particular Norris Trophy candidates have been while playing at five-on-five this season, and put together the chart below.

Interestingly, the defenceman who Damien Cox lauds as one of his Norris Trophy favorites, Dan Girardi, proportionately is on the ice for more goals than any of the aforementioned players. With a relative Corsi rating of 2.5 that is four to five times less than the other names on the list, this finding certainly lends itself it to Hockey Prospectus‘ belief that puck possession skills and the ability to tilt the ice and direct more shots at the opposition is one of the most impactful traits that a player can have. It also helps explain why Girardi has such high real-time statistics that will inevitably and misleadingly be used to justify Girardi’s inclusion in the Norris conversation.

To put into context how Karlsson’s percentage of Team 5v5 goals against stacks up, here is a look at how the members of the Senators’ blue line have fared.

As you can see, averaging five more even strength minutes per game while playing against the opposition’s best players, Karlsson has only been on the ice for eight-percent more of the team’s 5v5 goals against. What a liability!
